Conservative County Council Refuses to Fix Potholes Quicker

Conservative-run Herts County Council has rejected a bid to fix dangerous potholes quicker.

At present the County Council will take up to a month to fix reported holes on most roads other than main routes.

At the end of January the Conservative run County Council rejected a Liberal Democrat bid to half the amount of time it takes to fix faults. The Liberal Democrats want potholes fixed in 10 working days. Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Stephen Giles-Medhurst who proposed the move said:

"The Council admits that the majority of pothole defects are on unclassified roads and that potholes that are more than 50mm wide and deep will take up to 20 working days to fix. This means a month to be repaired. I do not think this is good enough.

Back in 2015 the potholes would have been fixed if they were 40mm deep and wide but the Conservatives changed this to 50mm and delayed the timescale for fixing them to a month. Yet our roads are just as bad as ever.

Whilst clearly we all need extra government funding to do everything necessary, waiting the extra time helps no one least of all cyclists. Nothing is gained in delaying repairs and it can result in damage to vehicles. There is nothing unreasonable about reducing repair timetables to ten working days."
