Alan Matthews, Bushey North borough ward candidate

Alan Matthews is aiming to join the hard-working team of Lib Dems on Hertsmere Borough Council. His priority is for new-build homes to have a fair proportion of social and affordable housing.

Alan says: "I want to give something back to the community that's given me so much".

BUSHEY Resident since 1980.
EXPERIENCE Former London council housing director.
COMMUNITY Ran campaign to save Bushey's Windmill House intermediate care home.
VALUES Committed to social justice and tackling climate crisis

Alan's Plan for Bushey

  1. Stop the Stadium: Alan, and ALL Bushey's Lib Dem councillors, will vote against any Local Plan which includes a Watford FC stadium on Bushey Hall Golf Course.
  2. No school at Bushey Country Club Equally, ALL Bushey's Lib Dem councillors will vote against any Local Plan which includes the proposed 1,950 pupil secondary school. Hertsmere does need another secondary school but it must be built where there is a genuine need for more capacity - in Radlett, Shenley or Borehamwood - rather than making parents drive their children to Bushey which already has more schools than those neighbourhoods. Siting a school at the Country Club would be a pointless sacrifice of precious public greenbelt.
  3. Fairer housing. This means ending the scandal of Hertsmere council hoarding £8 million in developers cash instead of investing it in social housing. It means pressing for a proper proportion of social and affordable housing in any new housing development which gets approval. And it means continuing to help individual residents who've been left homeless due to failings by the system.
  4. A greener Bushey. Bushey Lib Dems have already helped drive forward new planning rules for greater sustainability and solar panel requirements in new builds. These need to be taken further, alongside an expansion of rooftop solar power, more cycle lanes, and improvements in recycling.
  5. A cleaner Bushey Curb fly-tipping. Clean litter from the River Colne.
  6. Stay in touch The Lib Dem team will continue regular residents' surgeries. A new hotline for reporting local problems.
  7. Protect Bushey's greenspace and local heritage.
