Climate Emergency: Lib Dems plan powerful response

November 22, 2019 2:38 PM

The Liberal Democrats have a long and proud record of thinking globally and acting locally on climate and the environment. Whilst personal actions -- to use energy efficiently, to reduce waste and our carbon footprints -- are vital, it's clear that it's not enough. A global emergency demands action on an international scale. That means aligning closely with other countries to maximise the scale - and results - of each step taken. Click below to see our plans!

The best way to tackle the climate emergency is by remaining in the EU. Liberal Democrats will stop Brexit and work with our European friends and neighbours to take the bold action needed to deal with the climate emergency.

Climate Action Now

  • Legally-binding target to reach zero carbon emissions by 2045 at the latest Comprehensive action plan to reduce emissions across all sectors
  • funded by borrowing and an increase in air passenger duty

Renewable Energy

  • totally decarbonise electricity generation
  • Fast-track clean energy, doubling the proportion of wind, solar and tidal power from 40% of power to 80% by 2030.

  • Insulate all low-income homes by 2030, saving the average household £500/year

Green Industry, Green Jobs and Green Products

  • Support innovation to cut energy and fossil fuel use in industrial processes
  • Maximise recovery, reuse, recycling and remanufacturing, cutting resource use, waste and pollution
  • make Britain the world leader in wind and tidal power technology and engineering

Saving Nature and the Countryside

  • Protect the natural environment and reverse biodiversity loss with a Nature Act
  • Plant 60 million trees a year, helping to combat climate change
